Packing light: The tiny camera which packs a punch

Most of the time when going on a weekend adventure or an overnight trip, and especially on a longer adventure, you need to pack light. Having a camera with you on your travels is a necessity, in case you come across a view that could be worthy of being the next Mac wallpaper. You may think that you need to buy a big DSLR and have a spare couple of lenses on you for every possible outcome and as most of you know you can quickly fill up your bag with camera gear, leaving little or no room for the rest of your gear, food and water.

If that is how you like to do things and it works for you then go ahead, it is of course your trip and you should do it your way. If you are thinking to change up your shooting armoury or just want something smaller to take on day trips then I cannot recommend a GoPro highly enough.

I have been using GoPros for years for video capture, but only in the last year realised their capability for still images. They are miniscule and you can even carry them in your pocket if you don’t have space in that day-pack.

They are rugged, waterproof and reliable. Easy to use if you are a beginner photographer, but they also have an in depth manual mode (ProTune) where you can change all the setting from ISO to shutter speed and light balance. Having a wide angle lens also means you can get stunning landscape shots which you can struggle to get with a normal camera. The photo quality is amazing and a GoPro is now the only camera I take with me on my trips.

Also if you’re anything like me then you will always be looking for a dip on any adventure, be it a play in the waves, a relaxing float in a lake or a paddle down a river. Having a GoPro means your photo ops don’t end on dry land. You can use them anywhere, anytime and make your daypack a hell of a lot lighter on your shoulders.

All photos on this page were taken using my GoPro Hero 4 Silver (it has the built in LCD screen so you can see what you’re shooting).
