Solo week off work chasing fog in the Blue Mountains

Solo week off work chasing fog in the Blue Mountains (NSW)

So you’ve booked a week off from work to go exploring round the Blue mountains with a friend but at the last minute your friend has a disaster go down at work and has to bail. Do you cancel? Of course not! You go it alone and have a solo adventure and some me time in the wilderness.

I really had no idea about the Blue Mountains other than people telling me they were fantastic. So I packed up my gear, picked up my rental car from Jucy (nice and cheap) and I was off. With such a short drive from the centre of Sydney you are transported into quaint little villages and vistas that take your breath away.

A quick stop-in at the Three Sisters to tick that box and then I got out of there asap as the bus loads of tourists with their selfie sticks had the place overrun. Two days in Katoomba was enough for me, going to see the Katoomba falls which weren’t much more than a dribble at the time, and then hiking around there. Now if you’re ever in the Blue Mountains you have to check out Govett’s Leap, a perfectly placed lookout with breath-taking views next to Blackheath village. Also it is conveniently the starting point for the hike to Pulpit Rock, which is another must do.

I had heard about the Kanangra Boyd National park, which was a little further on from the Blue Mountains, a couple of hours drive from Katoomba. A beautiful bush camp site was where I set up for the night called the Boyd River camp ground. The aim of coming here was to see the Kanangra Walls but as every adventurer knows, the weather is not always in your favour. I had 2 and a half days of heavy fog, not being able to see 5 meters in front of me, let alone the valley below and the amazing drop off. I powered through hoping the fog would lift the next day but my hopes were not met and the weather got even worse. A shame, but not the end of the world. The Walls will still be there for me to go back to next time.
